Our Method

Our programs are based on a proven approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and are built in partnership with experts at Stanford University, Penn State University, and Washington University in St. Louis.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is all about the relationships between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT is problem-focused and action-oriented, with the goal of addressing specific challenges through hands-on exercises, practical strategies, and real-time tracking on how you're doing.

The Research Behind Lantern

Many studies have proven the effectiveness of internet-based emotional health programs, and confirmed the effectiveness of online coaching compared to in-person coaching. And online programs that use cognitive behavioral approaches like Lantern’s are proven to be the most successful.

Lantern's own programs have also undergone rigorous scientific research. In a study in partnership with Stanford University and Washington University in St. Louis, Lantern’s body image program was found to reduce eating disorders by 50%. The body image program is also the first of its kind that can actually prevent the onset of eating disorders in high-risk individuals.

In January 2014, this study expanded its outreach, launching Lantern's body image program at 40 colleges and universities across the United States. This ongoing research allows Lantern to improve its program while ensuring it remains effective.

Why Lantern Works

  1. 1. Our assessment identifies strengths and challenges.

Users start by taking our assessment, which is based on widely adopted methods of self-reporting thoughts and behaviors. This type of evaluation is proven to accurately and sensitively assess situations, symptoms, and emotions.

  2. 2. Daily exercises are tailored to specific needs.

Some of the ways our programs work:

By helping identify and restructure negative thoughts, it's been proven that through learning about yourself, you can increase your ability to deal with different and difficult situations.

By practicing skills to help deal with life's challenges, these skills provide lasting help. Your knowledge and ability to use these tools can last a lifetime.

  3. 3. Professional coaches offer support and feedback.

Every Lantern user is matched with a professional coach who is available when you need them to answer questions and give support and feedback.
